Environmental drivers of commercial blue swimmer crab (Portunus armatus) catch rates in Western Australian fisheries

چکیده
Sustainable fisheries management requires accurate stock assessment and an understanding of how targeted populations vary over space time respond to external stressors. Commercial fishery catch rate data (i.e. per unit effort; CPUE) are widely used assess performance can provide a measure abundance. However, changes in environmental conditions influence the two determinants CPUE, i.e. catchability (q) abundance (N). We explore variables (water temperature, wind speed, rainfall, freshwater flow, wave height, lunar illumination, tide height depth) on commercial blue swimmer crab Portunus armatus CPUE five Western Australian fisheries. Generalised additive mixed models (GAMMs) were identify which had greatest enabled predictions these with change. Water temperature significant positive effect all fisheries, although some exhibited decline above optimal range. Wind speed generally (but lower magnitude) effects three investigated, while illumination flow caused or less When annual standardised for effects, they displayed clear variation from nominal (raw) CPUE. These results highlight importance measuring accounting (e.g. through standardisation) when using assessments.

متن کاملInduced thermal stress on serotonin levels in the blue swimmer crab, Portunus pelagicus
The temperature of habitat water has a drastic influence on the behavioral, physiological and biochemical mechanisms of crustaceans. Hyperglycemia is a typical response of many aquatic animals to harmful physical and chemical environmental changes. In crustaceans increased circulating crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) and hyperglycemia are reported to occur following exposure to several en...
متن کاملThe Distribution of the Barnacle Epizoites, Chelonibita patula (Ranzani) on Blue Swimmer Crab, Portunus pelagicus (Linnaeus, 1758)
The frequency and distribution of barnacle (Chelonibia patula) on blue swimmer crab Portunus pelagicus off Persian Gulf Coasts were studied. A total of 545 crabs were examined and were of the same size range. The carapace width rangof crab werefrom 6.5cm to 16.5cm, carapace length from 4 to 8cm and weighed 80.5g to 220.4g. The barnacles were attached to the carapace, abdomen and walking legs. T...
متن کاملReproductive biology of the blue swimmer crab (Portunus pelagicus, Decapoda: Portunidae) in five bodies of water on the west coast of Australia
Portunus pelagicus was collected at regular intervals from two marine embayments and two estuaries on the lower west coast of Australia and from a large embayment located approximately 800 km farther north. The samples were used to obtain data on the reproductive biology of this species in three very different envi ronments. Unlike females, the males show a loosening of the attachment of the a...
متن کاملIgE Reactivity of Blue Swimmer Crab (Portunus pelagicus) Tropomyosin, Por p 1, and Other Allergens; Cross-Reactivity with Black Tiger Prawn and Effects of Heating
Shellfish allergy is a major cause of food-induced anaphylaxis, but the allergens are not well characterized. This study examined the effects of heating on blue swimmer crab (Portunus pelagicus) allergens in comparison with those of black tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon) by testing reactivity with shellfish-allergic subjects' serum IgE. Cooked extracts of both species showed markedly increased IgE...
